Another Submission for the Special Award for Paul Kitto Gold Award: Statement about Paul Kitto I have had the privilege of being managed by a truly inspirational manager that being Paul Kitto the way he conducts himself and always gets the best out of everyone he is in contact with is second to none. I believe he has given twenty eight years of his life to learning disability services enhancing and giving opportunities for development to all be that people we support or staff, the way he identifies the skills within a team and makes it person centered with the ethos being based around development and quality service delivery. He identified when I was under him that he believed the foundations were there as in his words “Your morals and values are there, your dedication and commitment is there” He then put in a learning and development structure for me to have a more holistic view of the care sector with an understanding of CQC and safeguarding, alongside the budget finance meetings this allowed me to be the manager I have developed into today – he even with his workload never was not there for not only me but the team and the people we support, there is no word that can describe his dedication and commitment for people with learning disabilities and autism. The teams he has managed have been recognised and even recently won the national award for team of the year, he always puts everyone else first and likes to raise the profiles of everyone around him. But now in my opinion alongside many others I have spoken to it is his time to have the spotlight for a lifetime of making a difference. ... See more
Afternoon All! Please see the submission before for Karen Parker. Karen Parker – Support Worker Home Instead Senior Care - Taunton Home Instead Taunton and West Somerset Team are thrilled that Karen Parker is among the finalists of the Somerset Care Awards. We, although we are a little bias of course, believe that Karen should win, and this is why : Because our Karen Parker puts thoughts into words, and then with our team, into actions! This is what we love about Karen and here are some examples among many! Karen attended the induction training when she started, including dementia training. What made Karen different was that we she put learning in to practice immediately and distinctively. Karen was going from client to client with a bag full of music, pictures and games. We quickly heard that clients were re -finding their love of music, remembering early life events and in short: coming alive. Fabulous! She builds relationships with clients incredibly well with her humour, knowledge and deep care for everyone who she supports. She had 3 clients who were resistant to any support with washing and had reached a worrying stage of self-neglect due to Dementia and also low self-worth. Within weeks Karen was able to support each of these clients with washing 7 dressing, the families were amazed as even they had not managed this. Once Karen had enabled regular washing and personal care to be happily accepted she thinks about their social life and began arranging trips out and activities in the home to help them enjoy life again. Karen is incredible at how she enable s people to live again and enjoy life to the full. Karen was walking beside a children's nursery in Ruishton. It crossed her mind that many senior people no longer see children but have often played a huge part in children's lives as parents, teachers, nursery school teachers, themselves. Karen walked straight in to the nursery and discussed the idea with the nursery head. The idea grew and different parties became involved. We are now able to say that we have a partnership with a local nursery and our senior clients will be reading to stories to young children from late September. The idea and action started with Karen. It ended with a wonderful outcome. Locally we have an amazing dementia community service called Reminiscence Learning. Amazing because it allows adults with dementia and their families to interact in normal sociable environments. Karen discovered the service. Karen supported her own clients to attend. Karen shared the idea with colleagues, and now many of our clients enjoy this service and their families too. Home Instead Taunton, as a result now share an excellent relationship with reminiscence learning, we share events and information with each other to create and improved provider network for seniors with dementia in Taunton. A wonderful example of how the clever care brain works ! Karen noticed that when she took her dog Lulu for a walk that people would often fuss over Lulu and that Lulu enjoyed it. Karen remembered that her senior clients would often talk about their pets normally deceased. Karen shared the idea with her office team and after all the paperwork we were able to offer a pet companionship service. Many of our clients now ring and ask for a visit from Lulu supported by Karen. People with dementia through stroking Lulu are suddenly able to recounts stories otherwise forgotten. Cleats are able to enjoy the simple but beautiful experience of being with a dog and telling their friends about it. Lulu is now a part of Home Instead. Karen started it, got people on board, and now delivers this service. She not only changed lives for the better but changed the face of care through our company for senior people. We call that Outstanding ! A little story about Karen to finish: A client of hers could only remember the village where she grew up as a child. There were no other records. Karen went to that village, asked around and discovered the house that the client grew up in. A few weeks later that client was enjoying tea and cake with its new owners in the living room she used to play in and sit with her family. This was one of our Outstanding KLOEs, recognised as Outstanding by CQC, showing excellence in responsiveness, caring and effectiveness. Well done Karen I could go on about Karen but will take up no more of your time, except to finish with this. Karen lives with a nasty muscular illness and lives with high anxiety levels, yet she sets off every working day and demonstrates excellent practice as well as making little miracles happen along the way. ...
